Why It Works
We Understand How Children with Down Syndrome Learn
This method is based on the understanding of both the learning strengths and weaknesses of learners with Down syndrome. It plays to the strengths and shores up the weaknesses, building confidence and success along the way.
Our Work Builds on the Experience and Research of Others
Respected research groups such as Down Syndrome Education International and the Institute for Achievement of Human Potential have gone before us in pulling together bodies of research which shorten our search for effective approaches to teaching reading to learners with Down syndrome.
Our Method Is Based on In-the-Trenches Experience
Nothing proves effectiveness as well as actual success. Many children and teens with Down syndrome have successfully learned to read with this method. Blending a thorough understanding of graphic design, brain perception, and teaching experience has produced these ideal materials.
The Books Are Funny and Sometimes Ridiculous
Dr. J. Langdon Down, identifier of the syndrome which bears his name, once said, "Individuals with Down syndrome have a heightened sense of the ridiculous." He meant it as a high compliment, and of course it is. We believe it, too, and so we design our books for giggles.
We Build Our Books Around "Hot Topics"
Motivation is essential for teaching a child with Down syndrome to read. Boring books don't breed success. With this in mind, we've designed our emergent reader books around favorite kid foods, proven hot topics to grab our readers' attention and motivate them to learn to read. Pizza, ice cream, peanut butter, macaroni...no argument there! We get their attention. Then our method and design holds that attention.
